To become licensed to practice Funeral Service in South Dakota, an applicant must:
(1) be at least 18 years of age;
(2) submit an application and fee ($125) to the board;
(3) complete at least 90 credit hours offered by an accredited institution of higher education;
(4) obtain a degree or certificate from a mortuary science or funeral service program that is accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service (please note, credits obtained in the mortuary program count towards the total 90-hour requirement in #3);
(5) complete one year as a trainee under a South Dakota funeral service licensee
(6) pass the national board examination administered by the International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Board; and
(7) have not committed any act that constitutes a ground for denying, suspending, or revoking a license under the South Dakota Practice Act.
