SB 78 passed during the 2023 legislative session creating the South Dakota Board of Physical Therapy and transferring the regulation of physical therapists and physical therapist assistants from the Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners to the newly created Board of Physical Therapy. The law will become effective July 1, 2023.

A. No. The DOH solicited names of those interested in serving on the board for consideration by the Governor who will make the final decision regarding appointments. Once board members have been appointed, the website will be updated.
Q. When will the first meeting be held?
A. The law becomes effective July 1, 2023. The first meeting of the board will be held as soon after that date as possible.
Q. What are some of the initial tasks to be completed by the new board?
A. At the first meeting, the board will:

Receive training on board duties and responsibilities;

Select an Executive Secretary to administer the day-to-day operations of the board;

Review proposed updates to the administrative rules for physical therapists and physical therapist assistant to reflect the new regulatory structure; and
- Assess the current fee structure and make recommendations for fees adequate to support board operations.
