Healthcare Career Camps

Scrubs Camp and Camp Med, our South Dakota Healthcare Career Camps, introduce high school and middle school students to careers in healthcare through hands-on activities and interactive learning. Participants explore a variety of healthcare professions, connect with industry professionals, and gain practical experience in a supportive and engaging environment.

Organized by the South Dakota Department of Health and its partners, these camps are designed to spark students’ interest in healthcare and help them discover the education and skills needed for future career paths. Camp Med provides early exposure for middle school students, while Scrubs Camp builds on that foundation with deeper career exploration for high school students.

During camp sessions, students participate in hands-on activities such as simulations, basic medical procedures, and interactive demonstrations led by healthcare professionals. These experiences help students build confidence, develop introductory skills, and gain a clearer understanding of the day-to-day work involved in various healthcare roles.

Both programs also connect students with real healthcare providers and educators who share their experiences and answer questions about training, education, and career pathways. Whether students are curious about nursing, emergency care, therapy professions, laboratory sciences, or other specialties, the camps offer meaningful exposure to the many opportunities available in healthcare.

Some camps also feature exhibitors from South Dakota universities and technical colleges. Students and parents/guardians can visit these booths to explore post secondary healthcare programs, ask questions, and learn more about educational pathways that align with the careers introduced at camp. These exhibitors provide valuable insights into training options, admission requirements, and opportunities available after high school for those interested in pursuing healthcare professions.
