ENGAGE: Building Safer, More Connected South Dakota Campuses

ENGAGE is an evidence-informed campus prevention strategy from the South Dakota Department of Health’s Rape Prevention Education Program designed to help create safer, healthier, and more connected college communities across South Dakota. ENGAGE brings students, faculty, staff, campus leaders, and community partners together to prevent sexual violence and strengthen the protective factors that help students thrive.
Building Connection. Creating Change.
When students feel connected to their campus, care about one another, and have opportunities to make a difference, they are more likely to build positive relationships and step in when they see concerning behaviors. ENGAGE focuses on strengthening community connectedness to help address sexual violence, stalking, bias and discrimination, mental health concerns, alcohol and drug use, and intimate partner violence.

Three Components. One Campus-Wide Approach.
- Bystander Intervention Training
Six interactive classes help students build the knowledge, confidence, and skills to recognize concerning situations and respond safely. - Collective Impact
Interdisciplinary teams work across campus and within the community to address shared risk and protective factors. - Social Norms Campaigns
Campus-wide campaigns promote a culture where caring for one another, respect, and community involvement are the expected norm.

South Dakota colleges and universities can tailor ENGAGE to their campus and community while maintaining the program's core components. Together, we can create campuses where students feel connected, supported, empowered, and committed to looking out for one another.
