Lead can be a contaminant in the air we breathe, food we eat, and water we drink. Lead poisoning may result in damage to the brain and nervous system, slowed growth and development, learning and behavior problems, and hearing and speech problems.
Lead poisoning is preventable through the identification, control and safe removal of lead hazards.
The South Dakota Public Health Laboratory (SDPHL) performs lead testing on human blood, water samples and paint chips. Please contact your health care provider if you have questions about blood lead testing. Elevated blood lead levels are a Category II reportable condition in South Dakota.

Children are at most risk from lead exposure because their growing bodies absorb lead more easily than the adult body. Unborn children may also be harmed by maternal lead exposure. There is no safe blood lead level.
