South Dakota Health Alert Network (SD HAN)
SD HAN is South Dakota’s statewide alerting and messaging system for public health. It provides timely updates, guidance, and notifications to healthcare providers and organizations across the state. Messages are shared by email with healthcare professionals, public health professionals, first responders, emergency managers, veterinarians, and Tribal health centers to support prevention, treatment, and coordinated response efforts.

SD HAN Communications
SD HAN 26-010 | Awareness of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Detection Among Local Poultry
This notice alerts medical providers that highly pathogenic avian influenza A has been detected in poultry flocks in Edmunds and Hamlin counties. Providers should watch for influenza symptoms in patients who had contact with sick or dead poultry or other animals within 10 days before symptoms began and follow recommended testing, treatment, isolation, and reporting guidance for suspected cases.
SD HAN 26-009 | Increased HIV Transmission Among People Who Inject Drugs in South Dakota
This notice alerts healthcare providers to increased HIV transmission among people who inject drugs in South Dakota, with injection drug use accounting for about half of new HIV infections in 2026 and 34 new diagnoses reported through July, a 62 percent increase over the five-year average for the same period. Providers should routinely offer HIV screening, assess risk factors, promptly test suspected acute infections, link patients to care, and discuss prevention options including pre-exposure prophylaxis and post-exposure prophylaxis.

This notice alerts medical providers that measles was detected in a child from Edmunds County and asks providers in nearby counties to watch for symptoms and possible exposure. Providers should report suspected measles cases to the South Dakota Department of Health immediately.
SD HAN 26-006 | Multistate Outbreak of Infant Botulism Linked to Powdered Infant Formula
This notice alerts providers to a multistate outbreak of infant botulism linked to recalled Nara Organics Whole Milk Organic Powdered Infant Formula. No South Dakota cases have been reported, but providers should watch for symptoms, ask about formula use, and report suspected cases immediately.
SD HAN 26-005 | Awareness of Measles Detection in Brookings County
Measles has been detected in a child from Brookings County. The South Dakota Department of Health (SD-DOH) asks medical providers to be alert for patients with potential exposure to measles or patients presenting with measles symptoms (fever, cough, runny nose, or red, watery eyes).

CDC Health Advisory 533 | Increase In Reported Human Rabies Exposures
This notice alerts providers to increases in human exposures to rabid or potentially rabid animals and errors in rabies post-exposure prophylaxis. Providers should complete careful risk assessments and follow recommended guidance for rabies vaccine and human rabies immune globulin administration. South Dakota providers can contact the Department of Health 24/7 for rabies consultation at 800-592-1861.
CDC Health Advisory 532 | Risk of Severe Arboviral Disease in Patients Receiving B Cell-Depleting or Modulating Medications
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is issuing this Health Alert Network (HAN) Health Advisory to share information and notify clinicians, public health authorities, and the public about the risk of severe arboviral neuroinvasive disease among patients who are receiving B cell-depleting or B cell-modulating medications, particularly anti-CD20 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). Patients and their providers should be aware of this risk to help patients protect themselves against the bites of mosquitoes and ticks, which can increase patients’ risk of arboviral disease.
CDC Health Update 531 | Domestically Acquired Cyclosporiasis Cases in Multiple U.S. States, 2026
CDC is investigating a sharp rise in domestically acquired cyclosporiasis across multiple states, including three reported cases in South Dakota, and urges providers to test suspected cases and report positive results within three days.
CDC Health Advisory 530 | Ebola Disease Outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda
The South Dakota Department of Health (SD-DOH) recommends clinicians suspecting Ebola infection in a returning traveler (within 21 days of departure) from the DRC and Uganda to contact the SD-DOH at 800-592-1861 for consultation and to support testing.
CDC Health Update 529 | 2026 Hantavirus Outbreak: Testing for Potential Infection
The South Dakota Department of Health (SD-DOH) asks clinicians to be mindful that testing for hantavirus due to Andes virus, associated with cases from the M/V Hondius, must be conducted at the CDC. Consultation is required with SD-DOH at 800-592-1861.
