State-designated trauma hospitals are divided into five groups, regional, area, community, receiving, and non-trauma.
Designated Tertiary Trauma Hospital (TTH)
- Currently verified American College of Surgeons Level 1 Trauma Center
- Trauma surgeon at all trauma team activations
- Neurosurgery continuously and promptly available
- Operates an organized teaching and research effort to help direct innovations in trauma care.
Designated Regional Trauma Hospitals (RTH)
- Currently verified American College of Surgeons Level II Trauma Center
- Trauma surgeon at all trauma team activations
- Neurosurgery continuously and promptly available
Designated Area Trauma Hospitals (ATH)
- Currently verified American College of Surgeons Level III Trauma Center
- Continuous surgical coverage of emergency department
- 24/7 in-house physician coverage of emergency department
- Orthopedic surgery on-call 24/7
Designated Community Trauma Hospitals (CTH)
- Surgical coverage of the emergency department for all trauma team activations 80% of the calendar year, minimum
- Trauma transfer guidelines in place when surgery is not available
- 24/7 physician coverage of emergency department
Designated Trauma Receiving Hospitals (TRH)
- 24/7 emergency department coverage by physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner
- No surgical services required
Designated Non-Trauma Hospital (NTH)
- Licensed specialty hospitals only
- Trauma transfer protocols are in place in the event a trauma is received
