Aug. 1-7 South Dakota joins the rest of the nation and countries around the globe in celebrating World Breastfeeding Week 2017. The theme of this 25th annual observance is “Sustaining Breastfeeding Together” to focus on working together to encourage, protect and support breastfeeding.
Health Department Urges Vaccination As Flu Activity Increases
People should not delay getting a flu shot now that flu activity is increasing in South Dakota. So far this season, South Dakota has reported 146 laboratory-confirmed cases and 26 flu-related hospitalizations. The best way to prevent getting sick with influenza is to receive a dose of influenza vaccine.

Aug. 1 through Aug. 7, South Dakota joins other states and countries around the globe in celebrating World Breastfeeding Week. This year’s theme, “Breastfeeding: Foundation of Life”, focuses on breastfeeding as a universal solution to improve the health and well-being of women and children.
Pennington County Resident South Dakota’s First Flu Death Of Season
A Pennington County resident in the 60-69 age group is South Dakota’s first influenza death of the 2018–2019 season, the Department of Health reported today. To protect patient confidentiality, additional information about the deceased is not being released.

2023 West Nile Virus Awards
The South Dakota Department of Health (DOH) is pleased to announce that nearly 200 cities, counties, and tribes across South Dakota will collectively receive $500,000 in grants to combat mosquitoes and prevent the spread of West Nile virus (WNV) in 2023. These grants have been allocated to support local efforts in controlling mosquito populations and reducing the risk of WNV transmission.
