The 2016 PRAMS-like survey provides information for South Dakota to assess overall pregnancy experiences and maternal health behaviors, and data may be used to develop, modify, or evaluate programs for new mothers and their children. Furthermore, the PRAMS-like surveys and the 2017 CDCfunded South Dakota PRAMS survey will provide useful baseline data to assess future trends in problematic areas. The current report includes data from the 2016 PRAMS-like survey and, where applicable, data from the 2014 survey.

School Vaccination Report, 2017-2018

For the 2017–2018 school year, 380 South Dakota schools with kindergarten classes submitted vaccination audit data to the South Dakota Department of Health. South Dakota’s overall coverage rate was 96.6% for the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine, 95.9% for the DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis) vaccine, 95.7 percent for the varicella (chicken pox) vaccine and 96.4% for the polio vaccine. All coverage rates met the Healthy People 2020 goal of 95% coverage for children in kindergarten, and exceeded most recent national rates. One concerning trend has been the incremental increase in the overall exemption rate from 1.8% in 2013 to 2.2% in 2017.

Youth Tobacco Survey Report, 2017

The 2017 South Dakota Youth Tobacco Survey (SD YTS) results reflect the changing landscape of tobacco use among youth nationwide. Rates of ever-using cigarettes and cigars among South Dakota (SD) middle school students are trending downward with a significant change in the use of these tobacco products.
