Health Department Staff Honored
Fifteen South Dakota Department of Health staff were recently recognized in the agency’s annual Secretary’s Awards Program. Awards were given in three categories: employee excellence, outstanding contribution to public health and the rising star award. The recipients of the awards are listed below.

A Day County resident in the 70–79 age group is South Dakota’s first influenza death of the 2017–2018 season, the Department of Health reported today. To protect patient confidentiality, additional information about the deceased is not being released.

So far this season, South Dakota has reported 146 laboratory-confirmed cases and 26 flu-related hospitalizations. Clayton Appointed State Epidemiologist
Secretary of Health Kim Malsam-Rysdon announced today that Dr. Joshua Clayton will serve as South Dakota’s next state epidemiologist. Clayton replaces Dr. Lon Kightlinger who retired earlier this month after serving 20 years with the Department.
