Prescription Drug Monitoring Program

This page serves as a vital resource for healthcare professionals and stakeholders seeking information on the state's PDMP, a critical tool in combating prescription drug abuse and promoting patient safety.

The PDMP is a state-run electronic database that tracks and monitors the prescribing and dispensing of controlled substances. By providing healthcare professionals with access to prescription data, the PDMP helps identify potential instances of overprescribing, drug diversion, and other patterns of misuse.

Specialized Registry – South Dakota Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (SD PDMP)

The SD PDMP was established by the State Legislature in 2010 (SDCL 34‐20E) to improve patient care and reduce the misuse, abuse, and diversion of controlled prescription drugs. The program became operational in March 2012 and requires dispensers to submit data on all controlled substance prescriptions dispensed to SD patients. SD prescribers and pharmacists may be granted online access to the program, PMP AWARxE, which provides invaluable information to aid in the decision-making process to prescribe and/or dispense controlled substance prescriptions.

The SD PDMP fits the criteria to be a public health specialized registry for the Electronic Health Record (EHR) Meaningful Use Incentive Program. Therefore, the SD PDMP declares readiness to accept data as a specialized registry to improve public health outcomes. This will be accomplished through the integration of Certified Electronic Health Record Technology (CEHRT) and the SD PDMP via PMP Gateway.

Interested entities including Eligible Hospitals (EHs), Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs), and Eligible Professionals (EPs) should contact Melissa DeNoon, R.Ph., Director of the SD PDMP at 605-362‐2737 or Melissa.DeNoon@state.sd.us. Active engagement must be demonstrated by data submitters to meet a measure under the Public Health Reporting objective and this active engagement may be demonstrated through any of the following options:

  • Option 1 ‐ Completed Registration to Submit Data
  • Option 2 ‐ Testing and Validation
  • Option 3 – Production
