EMR/EMT Continuing Education & Recertification

Stay up to date with essential EMS training and recertification at the South Dakota Department of Health's Continuing Education & Recertification. With a focus on enhancing patient care in remote communities, we want to emphasize the significance of ongoing training and professional development for EMS professionals. We provide comprehensive information about recertification requirements and offer a wide range of resources, including approved training courses, conferences, and online modules. By emphasizing the importance of maintaining up-to-date certifications, the South Dakota Department of Health aims to equip rural EMS providers with the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver high-quality emergency medical services.

(For ALS Continuing Education, please send your request directly to the SD Board of Medical & Osteopathic Examiners at sdbmoe@state.sd.us)

National Registry certification is required for entry into the state EMS System for all recognized levels.  All Advanced Life Support providers are required to be licensed through the South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners. It is recommended that you maintain your National Registry certification.

EMR/EMT Licensing Portal

The Emergency Medical Services Program reviews and approves basic life support (BLS) continuing education training to ensure that it is appropriate for recertification purposes following the National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) and National Registry’s EMR and EMT Recertification requirements.

All agencies or training centers offering BLS continuing education must submit the BLS Continuing Education Application form to the EMS Program two weeks before the beginning of the training date by logging into their account on the E-Licensing Portal.
