Infant Mortality 1-Pager, 2018-2022
From 2018-2022, there were 389 infant deaths in SD. The overall infant mortality rate increased from 6.3 in 2021 to 7.8 in 2022. This is the highest rate for SD since 2017 which was also 7.8.

The Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) is a CDC surveillance system that surveys South Dakota mothers about attitudes, behaviors, and circumstances before, during, and after pregnancy. Maternal Mortality 1-Pager, 2023
South Dakota is taking significant steps to address maternal mortality and improve pregnancy outcomes. In 2021, the Department of Health established the Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC), which meets regularly to examine pregnancy-associated and pregnancy-related deaths. Thanks to the MMRC’s insights, our Maternal Child Health team, working closely with Maternal Mortality in South Dakota Map created by the Office of Child and Family Services Community Health Nurses, has implemented several vital interventions. These include increasing post-partum visits for pregnancy care clients and providing depression screenings for pregnant and post-partum individuals.
Pregnancy-Associated and Infant Deaths in South Dakota, 2012-2021
The following report aims to describe the characteristics of mothers who died during pregnancy or up to a year after the pregnancy had ended, and the characteristics of children who passed away before their first birthday, in South Dakota, from 2012 to 2021. We will refer to those cases as pregnancy-associated and as infant deaths. There were 802 infant deaths during those 10 years, and 68 pregnancy-associated deaths.
