Tuberculosis Control Program Annual Report, 2025

During the last 10 years, South Dakota reported an average of 13 TB cases per year. During 2025, there were 13 cases of TB reported, which is an increase of one case from 2024 when 12 cases were reported.

In 2022 there were 74 unintentional and undetermined overdose deaths. A potential bystander was present in 41% of deaths, indicating there may have been an opportunity to provide life-saving actions at the time of the overdose. The largest proportion of overdose deaths were among males, individuals aged 35-44 years, and those who were White. 47% of deaths involved at least one opioid and 54% of deaths involved at least one stimulant. 49% of deaths were attributed to methamphetamine and 33% were attributed to fentanyl. 43% of deaths involved a stimulant and no opioids.

Suicide Surveillance Report, 2023

In 2021, there were 48,183 deaths classified as suicides in the United States (US), which was about one death every 11 minutes. Suicide was among the top 9 leading causes of death for people ages 10 to 64 years and suicide was ranked as the second leading cause of death for individuals aged 10-14 years and 20-34 years (2021).

Pregnancy-Associated and Infant Deaths in South Dakota, 2015-2024

The following report describes the characteristics of mothers who died during pregnancy or within one year of the end of pregnancy, as well as infants who died before their first birthday, in South Dakota from 2015–2024. Throughout this report, we refer to these losses as pregnancy-associated deaths and infant deaths. There were 787 infant deaths during those 10 years, and 75 pregnancy-associated deaths.

School Vaccination Report, 2017-2018

For the 2017–2018 school year, 380 South Dakota schools with kindergarten classes submitted vaccination audit data to the South Dakota Department of Health. South Dakota’s overall coverage rate was 96.6% for the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine, 95.9% for the DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis) vaccine, 95.7 percent for the varicella (chicken pox) vaccine and 96.4% for the polio vaccine. All coverage rates met the Healthy People 2020 goal of 95% coverage for children in kindergarten, and exceeded most recent national rates. One concerning trend has been the incremental increase in the overall exemption rate from 1.8% in 2013 to 2.2% in 2017.

Unintentional Falls Among Adults Aged 65 Years And Older, 2023

Unintentional falls are one of the leading causes of death for South Dakotans aged 65 years and older. From 2013 to 2022, there were 1,640 unintentional fall-related deaths among South Dakotans aged 65 years and older. The number of fall-related deaths increased 55% from 127 deaths in 2013 to 197 deaths in 2022. In 2021, South Dakota had the third highest age-adjusted rate (140.8 per 100,000) for unintentional fall-related deaths among individuals aged 65 years and older, the national rate was 78.3 per 100,000.

Alcohol-Related Death Data

In South Dakota, the number of alcohol-related deaths has been increasing in the last ten years. Alcohol-related deaths increased by 120%, from 150 deaths in 2013 to 330 deaths in 2022. South Dakota had the fifth highest crude rate for alcohol-related deaths at 19.4 per 100,000, while the United States rate was 10.6 per 100,000, 2011-2020.
