National Health Service Corps Recruitment Programs

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) is a Federal government program administered by Health Resources and Services Administration. NHSC builds healthy communities by supporting qualified health care providers dedicated to working in areas of the United States with limited access to care. NHSC administers programs to recruit health care providers to underserved areas designated as a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). The programs available are NHSC Loan Repayment Program, NHSC Students to Service Program, NHSC Scholarship Program, NHSC Substance Use Disorder Workforce Loan Repayment Program and NHSC Rural Community Loan Repayment Program. All programs offer a monetary incentive to health care providers for a service commitment in a HPSA. 

HRSA also offers NURSE Corps programs which include the NURSE Corp Scholarship Program and the NURSE Corp Loan Repayment Program. These programs are for nurses, nursing students, and nurse faculty.

National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program

The purpose of the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program (LRP) is to recruit and retain medical, nursing, dental, and behavioral/mental health clinicians in eligible communities of need designated as health professional shortage areas. This program provides the opportunity to have eligible student loans repaid while earning a salary. Trained and licensed providers who provide patient care under the following disciplines and specialties are eligible to apply to the NHSC Loan Repayment Program: Primary Care Physician (MD/DO), Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Certified Nurse Midwife, Dentist (DDS or DMD), Registered Dental Hygienist, Psychiatrist (MD/DO), Health Service Psychologist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Psychiatric Nurse Specialist, Marriage and Family Therapist, or Licensed Professional Counselor.

National Health Service Corps Substance Use Disorder Workforce Loan Repayment Program

The National Health Service Corps Substance Use Disorder Workforce Loan Repayment Program (SUD Workforce LRP) expands access to evidence-based substance use disorder treatment in underserved, high-need communities. The SUD Workforce LRP offers health care clinicians the opportunity to have their qualifying student loans repaid in exchange for serving at an NHSC-approved SUD treatment facility. Eligible disciplines include Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Certified Nurse Midwives, Physician Assistants, Behavioral Health Professionals, Substance Use Disorder Counselors, Registered Nurses and Pharmacists.

NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE CORPS RURAL COMMUNITY LOAN REPAYMENT PROGRAM

The National Health Service Corps Rural Community Loan Repayment Program (Rural Community LRP) supports clinicians working to combat the opioid epidemic in rural communities. The NHSC Rural Community LRP makes loan repayment awards in coordination with the Rural Communities Opioid Response Program (RCORP) within the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (FORHP) to provide evidence-based substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, assist in recovery, and to prevent overdose deaths in rural communities across the nation. Eligible disciplines include Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Certified Nurse Midwives, Physician Assistants, Behavioral Health Professionals, Substance Use Disorder Counselors, Registered Nurses, Pharmacists and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists.

National Health Service Corps Student to Service Program 

The NHSC Student to Service Program (NHSC S2S LRP) offers medical, nursing or dental students in their last year of school, loan repayment assistance for working in a HPSA. The provider must be pursuing a degree of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.), Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (D.M.D.), Nurse Practitioner (NP), or Certified Nurse-Midwife.

National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program

The National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program (NHSC SP) awards scholarships to students pursuing eligible primary care health professions training. In return, scholars commit to provide primary care health services in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs). Scholars commit to at least two years of full-time service in exchange for a full year of scholarship support. The students enrolled and accepted in the following disciplines are eligible: Physician, Dentists, Nurse Practitioner, Certified Nurse-Midwife, and Physician Assistant. The funding can be used for the following costs: tuition, required fees, reasonable educational costs, and a monthly support stipend.

NURSE Corps Scholarship Program

The Nurse Corps Scholarship program offers a student accepted or enrolled in a diploma, associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degree nursing program, funding for tuition, fees, and other educational costs. In exchange, the student must work at an eligible facility with a critical shortage of nurses, a Critical Shortage Facility (CSF), upon graduation.

NURSE Corps Loan Repayment Program

The NURSE Corp Loan Repayment Program offers support to registered nurses (RNs), advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) such as nurse practitioners (NPs), certified nurse midwives (CNMs), clinical nurse specialists (CNSs), and certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) and nurse faculty  to pay off a portion of their outstanding qualifying educational loans.
