CNA Renewal Information

Renewal Information:
- Registrants may renew 90 days or less prior to expiration
- Must demonstrate a minimum of 12 hours of training per year as required in 44:74:02:02(4)
- Must demonstrate a minimum of 12 hours of employment as a nurse aide for monetary compensation during the preceding 24 months.
- If the CNA can demonstrate the above requirements, submit the CNA Online Renewal application.
If CNA Registration has Lapsed:
To reinstate to an active status an applicant must:
- Print and complete the paper CNA Renewal Application.
- A current/previous employer must complete the employment verification section, verifying 12 hours of employment and 12 hours of training per year within the last 2 years.
- Once your renewal has been processed and approved, no card will be mailed from the SD Board of Nursing.
If CNA does not meet renewal requirements:
- The individual must retrain and retest.
- A list of approved Nurse Aide Training Programs (NATP) can be found here.
Contact Information Changes:
CNA Waiver of Training/Equivalency of Training:
- A nursing student who has successfully completed fundamentals in nursing courses (grade C or better) at an approved South Dakota nursing education program may apply for a waiver and submit copies of transcripts.
- The applicant must pass the CNA written and skills competency evaluations before being registered as a CNA.
- Application for Waiver of 75-hour Nurse Aide Training
- Please Note: Nursing school courses are not applicable for renewal of CNA registration.
