The Office of Rural Health, Emergency Medical Services Program reviews and approves BLS continuing education training to ensure that it is appropriate for recertification purposes following the National Continued Competency Program (NCCP).

All agencies offering BLS continuing education are required to submit a BLS Continuing Education Application to the Office of Rural Health/Emergency Medical Services Program at least 30 days prior to the beginning training date.  This process is designed to enable a sponsoring agency to announce or advertise the type and number of credit hour(s) that would apply for recertification.

  1. Complete the BLS Continuing Education application form, Application for BLS Training Approval. This form is designed to be filled out on your computer by typing in the areas then clicking on the box(s) of what category you will be teaching and entering the hours behind the topic. Once you have the form filled out, you can save it to your computer (rename the file if you like), then attach it to your email and send to Lance Iversen, or you may print and send via mail, or fax to 605-773-5683.  The course agenda, instructor's name, contact information, and a brief description is necessary in order to determine the appropriate recertification category and number of credit hour(s) each topic fulfills. If you have a formal agenda for the class/course, please include it with your application. A continuing education hour is based on 50 minutes of participation.
  2. Emergency Medical Services will review the BLS application and provide written approval in letter and/or certificate of attendance form to the sponsoring agency that includes the category and the number of credit hour(s) each topic fulfills.

  3. The sponsoring agency provides the attending EMT verification of attendance by: 1) providing a BLS certificate of attendance, or 2) by the instructor signing the "signature verification" column of the EMT recertification booklet. The EMT is responsible for recording the date, the number of credit hour(s) earned and the program description in the appropriate line of the recertification booklet, or they can record their training hours online in their State EMS account.

  4. The sponsoring agency provides a sign-up sheet at the end of the training for EMTs in attendance to sign. This form is then kept on file by the training agency and will be made available to the Office of Rural Health, Emergency Medical Services Program upon request.

  5. For all ALS requests for continuing education, please email your request directly to the SD Board of Medical & Osteopathic Examiners at or call the Board at 605-367-7781.  The Office or Rural Health/EMS no longer reviews/processes ALS continuing education.
