South Dakota Campylobacteriosis Cases Associated with Raw Milk (January 2012 - December 31, 2013)

  • 572 total cases of campylobacteriosis reported in South Dakota
    • 32 cases reported drinking raw milk; for 13 cases consumption of raw milk was the only risk factor reported
    • 19 of the 32 cases were children 19 and under; 8 cases were 5 years of age and under
    • Cases reported in Beadle, Butte, Clark, Davison, Day, Faulk, Hamlin, Hanson, Kingsbury, Lawrence, Lincoln, Marshall, Miner, Minnehaha, Perkins, Todd and Union counties
  • Actual case numbers are likely higher as most people with diarrhea self-treat rather than see physicians  

 

 

National Campylobacteriosis Outbreaks Directly Linked to Raw Milk

  • Since January 2012, disease outbreaks resulting from raw milk consumption have been reported in:

    • Minnesota (6 ill)
    • Pennsylvania (5 ill)
    • Alaska (31 ill)
    • Wisconsin (18 ill)
    • Oregon (18 ill)
    • Tennessee (9 ill)
    • Multistate outbreak in Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia and New Jersey (81 ill)
