South Dakota Campylobacteriosis Cases Associated with Raw Milk (January 2012 - August 30, 2014)

  • 791 total cases of campylobacteriosis reported in South Dakota
    • 42 cases reported drinking raw milk; for 21 cases consumption of raw milk was the only risk factor reported
    • 23 of the 42 cases were children 19 and under; 10 cases were 5 years of age and under
    • Cases reported in Beadle, Brookings, Butte, Clark, Davison, Day, Faulk, Gregory, Haakon, Hamlin, Hanson, Kingsbury, Lawrence, Lincoln, Marshall, Meade, Miner, Minnehaha, Perkins, Roberts, Todd and Union counties
  • Actual case numbers are likely higher as most people with diarrhea self-treat rather than see physicians
