August 28, 2012 Meeting
The Immunization Workgroup met Tuesday, August 28, 2012 in Pierre, to discuss the pending funding changes to the South Dakota Childhood Immunization Program. The meeting was opened by Secretary of Health Doneen Hollingsworth, followed by a presentation by Dr. Lon Kightlinger, State Epidemiologist, on South Dakota immunization coverage rates. Secretary Hollingsworth then gave an overview of the program, explaining the current system and the upcoming changes. Randy Moses from the Division of Insurance spoke briefly on the effects the Affordable Care Act will have on the immunization program.
Representatives from some of the state’s largest providers shared their practices and policies on administration of the program. This included representatives from Avera, Black Hills Pediatrics, DOH Community and Family Health Services, Falls Community Health, and Sanford. The floor was then opened for the workgroup to discuss options for the future maintenance of this program. Some big concerns were: will there be enough time to communicate the changes to providers, and the barriers these changes will create for some families currently utilizing the program, how can we simplify the process and improve rates.
A follow-up meeting was tentatively scheduled for December 2012.
