Looking is not seeing and Listening is not hearing: Integrating Art and Science
Keynote Speaker: Linda Honan Pellico, PhD, APRN, Yale University School of Nursing
As famed educator Maria Montessoir noted, we cannot create observers by saying "observe," but educating the senses provides the means and power for observation.
Dr. Pellico will creatively share information on how the process of "clinical seeing" and "clinical listening" can be constructed in novel environments. Her research shows that those who participate in an art museum activity subsequently observe more signs and symptoms, identify more objective clinical findings, and offer more alternative diagnoses than those who participate in traditional learning activities. Her research on aural training also reveals improved diagnostic ability in interpreting heart, lung, and bowel sounds.
Schools of Nursing and Health Care Organizations are invited to submit abstracts for a poster session to be held at this conference. Contact Barbara Vellenga for more information.
