What's New

As events warrant, news related to nursing regulation in South Dakota will be posted here.

  • Notice of Public Hearing

    • The Joint Board of Nursing and Medical and Osteopathic Examiners will be holding a public hearing on September 8, 2016, at 9:00 AM, 101 N. Main Ave., Suite 301; Sioux Falls, SD; to consider new and amended administrative rules. The proposed changes can be found at https://rules.sd.gov/detail.aspx?Id=291.

  • SD Nurse Practice Act Updates became effective July 1st, 2016

    • Updated SDCL 36-9-3 and 36-9-4.  The scope of practice laws were updated to reflect current nursing practice for both the registered nurse and the licensed practical nurse.  These changes do not expand or limit practice.

    • Updated SDCL 36-9-5.  Changed the Board of Nursing’s membership composition to more closely represent the population of RNs and LPNs in this state.  There are nearly 17,000, active RNs and 2,500 active LPNs in SD.  This statute was changed to from having six RN members to seven RN Members, and reduced LPN members from three to two.  The board will continue to be comprised of a total of 11 members who are appointed by the Governor.  Membership also includes 2 public members.
