Unlicensed Dialysis Technician (UDT)


Registry status implies only that an unlicensed individual has met the minimal training and testing requirements necessary to accept delegated tasks by a licensed nurse while under a nurse's supervision. Registry status does not imply that an individual has met moral, ethical, or legal standards. The registry should not take the place of an employer's hiring screening process or background check.

Applicable laws related to Unlicensed Dialysis Technicians:


Unlicensed Dialysis Technician (UDT) Registration:

 

1. Submit completed Initial Dialysis Technician Registration Application to the South Dakota BON. Allow up to 5-7 business days for the SDBON to process your application.

 

Notification of approval will not be mailed out. 


Allow 5-7 business for the South Dakota Board of Nursing to process your application.


Certification as a Dialysis Technician with one of the three organizations listed below is required for registration.

Unlicensed Dialysis Technician (UDT) Registration Renewal:

Please Note the Following:

  1. Dialysis Technician Registration remains active for two years after the date of issue.
  2. If your registration has lapsed, you may NOT renew online. Please refer to Lapsed Unlicensed Dialysis Technicians.
  3. You may renew your registration online as early as 90 days prior to expiration. A renewal notice and application is sent to the last known address for each registered UDT 90 days prior to expiration. Registration renewal information must be received by the South Dakota Board of Nursing office by your expiration date or your registration will lapse. You are responsible to maintain registration whether or not you receive a renewal notice.
     
  4. Maintaining active certification as a Dialysis Technician with one of the three organizations listed below is required for renewal.  

Lapsed Unlicensed Dialysis Technician:

To renew registration, the Dialysis Technician shall submit verification of:

1. If an Unlicensed Dialysis Technician (UDT) lets their registration (active registry status) lapse and can show verification a minimum of 12 hours as a UDT within the last 2 years as required in 20:48:16:03, and has active certification with a national certification organization listed above, they can complete the paper UDT Renewal Application.

  • Follow the directions below to submit a request to reinstate UDT registration:
    • Print and complete the UDT Renewal Application.
    • Have current/previous employer complete the employment verification section on page 2 of the UDT Renewal Application.
    • Once completed, submit the application to the South Dakota Board of Nursing for processing.

2. If an Unlicensed Dialysis Technician (UDT) lets their registration (active registry status) lapse and has not worked a minimum of 12 hours as a UDT within the last 2 years as required in 20:48:16:03, the individual must complete a new Unlicensed Dialysis Technician Training Program. The individual must also have current certification with one of the certification organizations listed above.

  • In order to get back onto the UDT registry the individual would need to do the following:
    • Complete a board approved Unlicensed Dialysis Technician Training Program
    • Prove active certification with a national certification organization
