2004 Survey — South Dakotans take WNV precautions

A 2004 survey of 6,140 adult South Dakotans found that 69% took precautions against West Nile virus during the summer. (South Dakota Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey 2004)

Unfortunately the elderly are at highest risk of West Nile disease and people over 65-years were the least likely to take precautions. Men (63%)were less likely to take precautions than women (75%).

Interestingly, seniors (>65-yrs) who had a flu shot were more likely to take WNV precautions than those who did not get a flu shot.

A complete summary of the West Nile survey results is available in the South Dakota Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey 2004.
