Fast Facts About Permethrin and Mosquito Control

What is permethrin?
Permethrin is a synthetic version of the natural pyrethrum insecticide that protects vegetation from insect attack. Permethrin was developed in the 1970’s specifically for use on clothing for repellent purposes.

What does permethrin repel and how effective is it?
Permethrin repels and kills mosquitoes, ticks and other insects exposed to it. US military tests over the past 20 years, found the combination of DEET insect repellent on the skin and permethrin treated clothing was very effective against mosquito and tick bites.

How does permethrin work on clothing?
Permethrin repels ticks and mosquitoes that land on treated clothing or fabric. Ticks and mosquitoes fall from the fabric and nearly all die from a limited exposure. In addition to clothing, permethrin may be used on sleeping bags, tents, camper canvas, stroller nettings, etc. It is available in aerosol and non-aerosol forms.

Can you apply permethrin to the skin?
No. Skin can quickly deactivate its effectiveness. Permethrin was designed for application on clothing or other fabric. It is recommended to use insect repellent containing DEET for applying to the skin.

How long does an application of permethrin last?
Properly treated garments will provide protection for anywhere from three days to two weeks or more and last through two detergent washings. It is non-staining, odorless and has a high resistance to sunlight, heat and moisture. Permethrin does breakdown when exposed to ultraviolet light.

Is exposure to permethrin harmful to people?
It is virtually non-toxic and no systemic effects have been reported. In EPA and FDA tests, a very small percentage of people reacted with skin reddening and other irritations. These irritations were extremely rare.

Can’t I just use natural oils as repellents such as those with citronella in them?
Testing indicates products that use citronella or other oils are not as effective. Because they are “natural” products the EPA has no authority to regulate them or assure they meet particular standards of safety and efficiency.

Where do I find products with permethrin?
