South Dakota WIC Program

The department's WIC Program is seeking public comment on the development of the State Agency WIC Plan for 2012, Comments are due by July 13, 2011.

WIC is a special supplemental nutrition program for eligible women, infants and children, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered by the South Dakota Department of Health. WIC’s goal is to promote and maintain the health and well-being of nutritionally at-risk women, infants and young children. WIC is available in most counties in the state, or covered by surrounding county, and is an equal opportunity program. It provides:

Nutrition education and counseling on:

Breast-feeding support :

Healthy foods based on individual needs:

  • Milk
  • Peanut butter
  • Cheese
  • Fresh /  frozen fruits and vegetables
    (in the form of a cash voucher)
  • Canned or dried beans /  peas
  • Juice (adults and children only, no infant juice)
  • Cereal
  • Eggs
  • Canned tuna, salmon or sardines (only for specific participants)
  • Infant baby foods: fruits / vegetables (all infants) and meat (only for breastfed infants)
  • Infant cereal
  • Infant formula

Referral to:

  • Doctors/nurses
  • Community services
  • Health agencies
  • Social service agencies such as Medicaid, Food Stamps, or TANF
  • Immunizations available if needed or referral
