Public Health Preparedness and Response

Hospital Preparedness

The primary focus of the South Dakota Hospital Preparedness Program is to provide leadership and funding to enhance the infrastructure of hospitals and collaborating entities to plan for, respond to and recover from mass casualty events.  The program promotes medical surge capacity through a tiered response that facilitates the movement of resources, people and services and enhances overall capabilities.  All emergency preparedness and response efforts will be consistent with the National Response Plan and the National Incident Management System.

Regional planning: South Dakota has four Hospital Planning Regions. The regional planning committees represented by the hospitals, and other response partners meet to develop regional emergency preparedness plans and protocols that identifies notification and communication systems,  identifies regional resources and facilitates the appropriate placement or allocation of those resources to best respond to a mass casualty event.

Hospital Bed Tracking System: South Dakota will be capable of reporting bed categories that are consistent with Hospital Available Beds in Emergencies and Disasters (HAvBED) requirements and definitions. The system will connect to the South Dakota Emergency Operations Center and have the capability to link directly to the HHS SOC.
