- The Office of Health Protection will hold a public hearing May 13 in the Health Lab Building, 615 East 4th Street, Pierre at 10:00 a.m., to consider the adoption and amendment of proposed rules numbered 44:02:02:00, 44:02:02:03, 44:02:02:05, 44:02:02:08, 44:02:02:10 to 14, 44:02:02:17 to 20, 44:02:02:22, 44:02:02:25, 44:02:05:01, 44:02:05:04 to 06, 44:02:05:08 to 13, 44:02:05:15, 44:02:05:17, 44:02:05:18, 44:02:05:22, 44:02:05:25, 44:02:05:26, 44:02:06:01, 44:02:06:02, 44:02:06:04 to 06, 44:02:06:08 to 11, 44:02:06:13, 44:02:06:15, 44:02:06:17 to 19, 44:02:06:21, 44:02:08, inclusive. The reason for adopting the proposed rules is to update the current rules that cover the present lodging categories and also to establish new rules for the vacation home category which was passed during the 2008 legislative session. Vacation home facilities are currently being licensed as specialty resorts.

- The Office of Family Health will hold a public hearing May 20 in the Health Lab Building, 615 East 4th Stree, Pierre at 10 a.m. to consider the adoption and amendment of proposed rules numbered
44:06:01:08, 44:06:01:08:01, 44:06:02:02, 44:06:02:04, 44:06:02:05, 44:06:03:04, 44:06:03:05, 44:06:04:01, 44:06:04:02. The effect of the rules will be to increase family income guidelines, remove family cost share requirement, and revise eligibility requirements.
The reason for adopting the proposed rules is to provide more direct financial assistance to children and families dealing with the expenses of chronic medical conditions.

- Applications are now being accepted for the 2008 Mosquito Prevention and Control Grant Program. May 16, 2008 is the deadline for submittng applications.
- Save the date! June 4, 2008, 12-4 pm CT, is the next Pediatric Update from the University of Alabama Birmingham. This year's theme is"Assessment, Treatment and Environmental Factors that Impact Childhood Obesity." Topics include Assessment of the overweight/obese child, Interventions/Treatments that work, Sleep & Obesity in Pediatrics, and Food marketing to children. DOH will again plan to downlink across the state. More information will follow in the spring.
- Sister Study - a long-term study of women, 35 to 74 with sisters who had breast cancer; sponsored by the the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Effective April 1, 2008, the Sister Study is limiting enrollment to groups of women who are underrepresented in the study. It is still seeking Native Americans, African Amiercans, Latinas, Asians and Pacific Islanders between the ages of 35 and 74 to enroll. It is also seeking Caucasian women who have a high school degree or less or are between the ages of 65 and 74. Find out about enrolling at the Sister Study website.
