South Dakota' s Department of Health, Board of Nursing and Board of Regents work together on a variety of programs to address the nursing shortage in the state.
The South Dakota Center for Nursing Workforce in the South Dakota Board of Nursing serves as a clearinghouse of information on nursing, including jobs and applicants.
Expanded nursing education programs are available at South Dakota State University and the University of South Dakota. Contact the South Dakota Board of Regents for more information.
A Health Professional Recruitment Incentive Program is available in the Department of Health for nurses and other health professionals. The program provides a $5,000 incentive for up to 60 individuals a year who agree to practice in South Dakota for a minimum of 2 years. Call the department's Office of Rural Health at

NOTE: A federal Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program is also available to provide loan repayment assistance to nurses. The program is administered by the Bureau of Health Professions in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration.
