South Dakota Child Influenza Vaccination
As of the 2007-2008 influenza season, South Dakota provides free flu shots for South Dakotans aged 6 months to 18 years. While the vaccine is free, providers may charge an administration fee; the fee must be waived if the individual is unable to pay.
Parents should be aware that some children may need two doses of flu vaccine:
- Children younger than 9 years of age need 2 doses of influenza vaccine if being vaccinated for the first time
- Children 6 months through 8 years of age who received only 1 dose of influenza vaccine in the first year they were vaccinated need to receive 2 doses of vaccine the second year they are vaccinated.
- The two doses should be given at least 4 weeks apart (at least 6 weeks if the inhaled vaccine (FluMist©) is given).
