Cardiovascular Disease Facts
Cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke, is the leading cause of death in both the United States and South Dakota.
The following data is taken from South Dakota’s Vital Records and Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS).
Mortality
- Heart disease accounted for 1,743 (24.8%) of South Dakota’s 2006 resident deaths.
- In 2006, heart disease was the leading cause of death for both men and women as well as for whites and Native Americans.
- Cerebrovascular diseases accounted for 437 deaths in South Dakota residents. Stroke caused a majority of the deaths for this type of disease.
Risk Factors
- Overall, 25.1% of respondents are at risk for high blood pressure.
- 34.0% of respondents were told their cholesterol was high.
- Overall, 6.4% of respondents were informed they have diabetes. This is up from 2.9% in 1995.
- 62.8% of South Dakota adults were classified as being overweight or obese.
- 22.5%of those surveyed indicated they engage in no leisure time physical activity.
- 19.8% of South Dakotans indicated they were current smokers.
Other Facts
According to the 2004 Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System (PedNSS) and the 2004-2005 School Height and Weight Report for South Dakota students:
- 18.1% of SD 2-5 year olds were at risk for overweight and 13.9% were overweight.
- 16.1% of SD 5-8 year olds were at risk for overweight and 14.3% were overweight.
- 17.1% of SD 9-11 year olds were at risk for overweight and 18.4% were overweight.
- 16.8% of SD 12-14 year olds were at risk for overweight and 16.5% were overweight.
- 16.4% of SD 15-19 year olds were at risk for overweight and 16.0% were overweight.
- 60% of overweight 5 to 10-year-old children already have at least one risk factor for heart diseases, including hyperlipidemia and elevated blood pressure or insulin levels.
According to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) 2005:
- Many families have diets that are too high in fat, low in fiber, and low in fruits and vegetables.
- 20.5% of South Dakotans eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
